David DeAveiro taught that hard work, commitment and discipline are key in achieving your goals.

"We've tried to focus on fundamentals and footwork, but we also touched on the idea of the work commitment and the work ethic that you need to be successful," said DeAveiro.

More than 130 basketball players participated in the 16th annual P.R.I.D.E Basketball Camp at O'Gorman High School and Ecole Anicet Morin where they honed their skills on the hard-court with drills, games and competitions, team sessions, video analysis and top notch instruction.

David DeAveiro was appointed the head coach of the McGill University men's basketball team in May 2010 after a stellar playing and coaching career with the Ottawa Gee-Gees, where he was the team's all-time leader in coaching wins.

He was named three-times as the Ontario University Athletics East coach of the year (2006, 2007, 2010). He also served as an assistant coach with Canada Basketball on numerous occasions, including the men's junior and senior national teams.

"It was a great experience," said DeAveiro. "When I was asked to come up I was honoured to come and working with these kids has been an absolute pleasure. They've been like sponges with everything we've thrown at them. It hasn't been easy for them because of the whole bunch of teaching."

Megan Roy was involved the P.R.I.D.E Basketball Camp in order to step up her game in time for the next school year when she enters Grade 10.

"It was really great because he has a lot of experience and we learned a lot of new stuff and drills," said Roy. "He works on the details which is the best thing to do. I wanted to work on everything from my shots to dribbling. I get really nervous on point guard so dribbling is really hard for me, but he helped a lot with footwork."

On DeAveiro's final day with the young basketball players he had them working on one-on-one drills and defensive positioning.

He was able to communicate the finer points of the game without deflating the player. He shared stories from his career that were meant to inspire, which seemed to strike a chord with the budding basketball stars.

"His stories at the end and how he talked to us," said Roy. "He showed us to never give up."

DeAveiro said, "They grasped it, absorbed it and they've been trying to apply it on the floor, so they've been working really hard for the last three days. Some of them are in Grade 8 or 9 and you see the potential they have if they keep working hard."

Being in Montreal we don't know much about Northern Ontario. It was an opportunity to see the kids up here. The skill level up here and the commitment of these young kids."
